Useful Resources for Students in the Visual Arts Program

This is not a full list of sites and resources these are just a few of my favorite ones

Art Blogs & Sites

LenScratch is considered one of the 10 Photography-Related blogs you should be reading by Source Review, Wired.com, Rangefinder and InStyle Magazine.

The Guardian Art Section: The Guardian is a British paper with a very good and in depth art section with show reviews and articles on the art and design world.

New York Times Arts Section: The New York Times culture pages cover everything from TV and film reviews to articles on trending artists and designers.

Juxtapoz Magazine: an on-line magazine that covers photography, design, graffiti and much more.

Rhizome: is a magazine that looks at the intersection between art and technology

Museum & Art Festivals:

National Gallery of Art

Tate Galleries

Louvre

Serpentine Gallery

Biennale di Venezia

MOMA

Documenta 14

Pompidou Center

Whitney Biennial

Research Resources:

South Carolina State University on-line resources directory is a great way to access digital material both while on and off campus. Just login with your id and password.

JSTOR is a site that archives journals, primary sources and books from many academic sources. This is one of the first stops for any paper you are writing.

ARTSTOR is a visual archive with images from museums and private collections for use in academic papers and research.

Google Scholar: Unlike a normal Google search this web search engine will show reputable articles and sources first.

Kahn Academy's art history page is a good place for quick introductions to a multitude of subjects. THIS IS NOT REFERENCE MATERIAL FOR PAPERS, it is just so you can get started or familiarized with a new topic.

eTurabian.com: This website can help with the proper formatting of footnotes and bibliographies.

Portfolio websites:

Behance is the Adobe portfolio website. It is not curated so the quality of the work is not guaranteed but it is an interesting place to put your work and to discover what people around the world are doing.

Calls for Entry:

The following websites list art competitions that you can enter to get into national and international shows. Be prepared for tough competition but great satisfaction if you manage to enter shows.

Worthwhile Artist to Look at:

While some of these artists do not have their own websites you can still find exhibitions, images and articles by and on them with a quick web search: Juan Logan, Kehinde Wiley, Colin Quashie, Deborah Willis,Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Fahamu Pecou, Lorna Simpson, Panamarenko, Anish Kapoor, Maurizio Cattelan, Sheila Pree Bright, Lori NIx, Nan Goldin, Andy Goldsworthy, Zig Jackson, Abelardo Morell, Piero Manzoni, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Sonia Cillari, Jenny Holze and Jeremy Deller.

Just for Laughs:

Arty Bollocks creates meaningless artist's statement. Beware that faculty knows of this site or similar and can tell when your artist statement is generated from sites like this. Just use it for a laugh; DO NOT TURN THESE STATEMENTS IN!

Invisible art: the gallery hoax that shows how much we hate the rich. People love to lampoon a credulous art world, but the reaction to the fake invisible work of ‘Lana Newstrom’ shows just how repelled we are by its marketplace.

Fine Art Graduate Programs:
